I’ll never forget the feeling of racing across the bay in that skiff, hoping to get close enough for a great picture before this whale quit playing. We went full throttle and arrived just as he dived for a meal. When he didn’t surface for a while, we figured we missed him. Just then he shot out of the water directly ahead of the boat. I snapped some pictures and felt the sound of his back splashing back into the bay, then watched as he circled raised his fins one last time before disappearing. Pictures just can’t capture what it’s like at Pybus Bay – it completely changed my mind about Alaska.
