Tongass National Forest, and specifically Admiralty Island National Monument, has the highest density of brown bears in the world, and one of the highest densities of brown bears as well. Admiralty Island, where our lodge is located, is actually known by the native Tlingít people as “Kootznoowoo,” or “Fortress of the Bears.” There are more than 1,600 brown bears on the island (black bears are found elsewhere in the 17 million acres of the national forest), which is more than all the brown bears in the lower 48 states combined.
Book NowSeeing a bear on your trip is not guaranteed because the bears really don’t like seeing you, but if you keep a keen eye on the shore lines or enjoy an afternoon on the river your chances will go way up.
When you’re in bear country it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and take proper precautions. Because of the high density of bears on the island it is not recommended to go hiking alone near the lodge, but our guides can help you increase your chances of seeing a bear as part of your visit.
