Seals & Sea Lions

Our guides can take you to see the incredible sea lions and seals during your stay at Pybus Point Lodge, and just like everything else here, it’s all included.

Stellar (northern) sea lions are incredible to see. They are found in the coastal region of Alaska’s Inner Passage all year long, but are easier to spot in the summer months. These sea lions are the largest of the eared seals, with males that can grow as large as 1,300 pounds and look like they are walking on land as they shuffle on their giant flippers. Females area bout the same length as their male counterparts, but weigh much less. They got their name as the “lion” of the sea because, much like the lions on land, they have disproportionately large neck and shoulders compared to the rest of their body, and their calls sound more like a roar than the bark of other seals.

Wildlife in the Rookeries

The best places to spot these beautiful creatures is on the rocky outcroppings of the Alaskan shore (called rookeries). Sea lions and seals bask in the sunshine for hours before plopping into the water to grab some food. While you can find them all along the coastal shores of the Pacific Ocean, from Russia and Japan to British Columbia and California, the largest populations are in Alaska.
