Advanced Planning for an All-Inclusive Alaskan Fishing Trip

Pybus Point Lodge Logo

At Pybus Point Lodge, we're incredibly proud of the level of service and detail we provide to our clients. Our all-inclusive Alaskan vacation packages include absolutely everything you might need during your trip, from lodging and meals through equipment, expertise, safety training and numerous other areas.

When booking any of our all-inclusive Alaskan trips, you may even be somewhat overwhelmed by all the options and features we provide. Between this and the varying needs our clients often have for their trips, we recommend doing some advanced planning before booking your adventure. With this concept in mind, here are some of the top themes we recommend you consider before and during the Alaskan fishing trip booking process.

Remote Lodges and Flights

Pybus Point Lodge is extremely secluded, part of our incredible appeal as a vacation destination. Our remote location is only accessible via float plane or a long boat ride -- but we offer a chartered float plane as part of our all-inclusive package, allowing you the fastest and most convenient access to our lodge.

For this part of the trip, it's important to consider some basic knowledge about float plane travel in Alaska. Float planes are small, single-engine aircrafts that land on large bodies of water or lakes scattered throughout the state -- some even take off from snow and ice. In most cases, your pilot will get a weather report before every flight to ensure your safety and comfort, but sometimes they can be delayed due to strong winds, broken equipment or mechanical issues.

Additionally, it's important to be familiar with basic packing and weight allowances for the plane. There are strict restrictions on how much you can bring because of weight limitations, so keep this in mind while planning your trip.

If plane travel isn't an option for you or someone in your party, contact our team about alternative options.

Choosing Saltwater Vs. Freshwater Fishing

Alaska also offers numerous opportunities for both saltwater and freshwater fishing, from salmon to smallmouth bass. When booking any of our all-inclusive trips, you have the option to go freshwater fishing at nearby rivers or choose a saltwater experience on one of Alaska's legendary salmon runs.

When thinking about your ideal Alaskan fishing vacation, consider some of the differences between these experiences. Saltwater fish tend to be larger and live longer, whereas fresh water fish tend to be faster and more aggressive. Saltwater fishing generally requires a bit more patience, as the salmon have to first swim upstream before they're ready to bite -- freshwater fishing can often be almost immediate. Alaska's world-famous salmon runs are an incredible experience that shouldn't be missed, so pick your destination and let us know how we can help you make the trip happen.

Time of Year

The season in which you visit Alaska for a fishing trip is also an important consideration, as it can affect everything from the weather to the size and availability of our local fish.

Northeastern Alaska is one of the most temperate climates in North America, and we offer open year-round fishing opportunities. From May through September we have a high chance of success on some of Alaska's best salmon runs -- including Silver Salmon, King Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Red Salmon and more. After September, the fishing is still excellent but tends to focus on trout and char.

Equipment and Tackle Requirements

When booking any of our all-inclusive trips, it's important to consider what equipment will be provided -- this will vary based on a few factors, but the largest one by far is your personal preference. If you're an experienced fisher with lots of your own gear you want to bring, we're happy to accommodate you and also provide any items you don't have or can't fit; if, on the other hand, you're just looking for a great Alaskan fishing experience without the hassle of figuring out what to bring, we can easily provide you with all necessary gear.

Our equipment choices are designed around a few factors: Comfort, protection/durability and ease of use. We want our guests to have a great experience on the water and hope they return with lasting memories.

Guided vs. Unguided Trips

Whether you're an experienced fisher who knows exactly what kind of Alaskan fishing experience they desire or this is your first time venturing outside to try something new, we offer guided and unguided trips for every level. Most of our standard fishing trips are guided, including our watercraft trips.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a more authentic experience and know what kind of fishing you want to do, an unguided option is perfect for experienced anglers. Our area offers many freshwater streams and similar areas where you can fish on your own, as long as you're taking the proper safety precautions of course. Consider your preferences and which of these you prefer -- you can also mix and match to your heart's content.

Cost Factors

Finally, cost is an obvious factor to consider, but one we never blame our clients for taking a detailed approach in. Be sure to do your research on what you'll need, but also consider the value of what you're getting. Visiting Alaska for a fishing trip isn't exactly cheap, but understanding exactly what you're paying for and where your money is going will help you make the right choice for your wallet and ensure that every penny is well-spent.
