New Year’s Resolutions for Fishing and Outdoors Lovers

Pybus Point Lodge Logo

As we bound into the new calendar year of 2022, many people take on the yearly habit of making New Year's resolutions. And while these are often in personal self-improvement or related areas, there's no rule saying this has to be the case -- and some people make their resolutions in varying different areas, such as a passion they have, with the outdoors a common such topic.

At Pybus Point Lodge, we're proud to offer the very best Alaska has to offer in terms of numerous outdoor areas, from our Alaska all-inclusive fishing and wildlife packages to land tours, whale watching and many other activities that help you enjoy one of the most beautiful locations on the planet. Whether you're considering a trip to our lodge or thinking about any other kind of New Year's resolution to spend more time outdoors or try a new outdoor activity, here are some suggestions we can offer on areas to consider.

Trying Out a New Location -- Like Alaska!

For many people, a New Year's resolution that relates to outdoor pursuits will involve a new location. Many of us use resolutions to convince ourselves to jump outside our typical comfort zones, and if you're looking to get out of your typical environment, why not take a trip to Alaska?

We get all kinds of visitors here at Pybus Point Lodge because we offer such an incredible range of activities -- but there's no place else where you can get the kind of fishing opportunities that our location offers. From saltwater to salmon fishing, fly fishing to king crabbing, you can experience an incredible range of outdoor activities here.

Make a National Park Bucket List

National parks are another major item that sit on many people's bucket list, and a New Year's resolution is a perfect way to make sure you finally get around to it. If you want to experience a new park or add to your list, why not try something here in the United States?

Some of these things are more personal preference, of course. However, we're naturally somewhat partial to the national parks in Alaska -- there are eight different such destinations to experience, from the Denali National Park and Preserve in the northern region to Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve in the southwestern area. There's a range of activities within a national park, but whatever you do here is going to be an incredible experience that you won't forget anytime soon.

Whether you're looking to fish, kayak, picnic, bird-watch, or just enjoy the natural beauty of Alaska and its national parks, there's a perfect destination for you. And Pybus is here to help: whether it's taking care of transportation or offering some additional activities you can enjoy during your visit, we're your guide for an incredible outdoor experience in Alaska -- which also happens to be home to one of the most beautiful natural locations on the planet.

Observe the Night Sky Weekly

For many, a major part of their love for the outdoors is viewing the stars and the incredible beauty of the night sky. This is one of those personal experience goals that everyone has to decide for themselves, but it's certainly something many can agree with -- and an excellent topic for a resolution!

Even if you don't have any immediate travel planned to a location like Alaska, which features many opportunities to view the Northern Lights, why not take on a New Year's resolution to observe the night sky weekly? If you're back home, doing this can be as simple as going outside at night and spending some time looking up into the stars. It may sound like a small thing, but it can open your eyes to all kinds of new things and experiences -- and even if you're not an early riser, you might be surprised by how much you can see at night.

For many, this regular activity serves as preparation for their eventual trip to Alaska. Spending weeks or months learning how to properly read a map, bake in the great outdoors, and other outdoor skills is a challenge for anyone -- but if you can get used to these things before you visit Alaska, it's going to make your experience that much better.

Practice Your Outdoor Photography

Another great preparation area you can take part in virtually anywhere, but will help you be ready for trips to specialty locations like Alaska or others: Hone your outdoor photography skills.

Of course, this is a broad topic on its own and can mean many different things to different people. For some, it means learning how specific cameras work -- from the regular digital camera you may have on hand already to newer options like waterproof cameras or DSLRs. Others learn more about composing their shots, taking the right photos for the location, and so on.

Outdoor photography is a topic unto itself, but if your goal for the year is to take better photos of the great outdoors wherever you are -- or ideally, when you're out in Alaska -- then now's a great time to start doing that.
