Visiting Alaska is an amazing opportunity to disconnect from the modern world and reconnect with the great outdoors. Unfortunately for most of us, it can be difficult to actually put our lives on pause while we go on vacation–no matter how much we’d like to.
Unlike some other Alaska all inclusive resorts, we’ve heavily invested in our technological infrastructure to ensure that you’ll still be able to communicate with the outside world while staying at our lodge. We’re proud to say that we now offer full wifi connection via Starlink allowing you to have a shockingly great internet connection considering how remote you are. We’ve also installed multiple AT&T cell boosters on our property to help you send and receive messages and even make phone calls.
When you stay at Pybus you can always stay connected with your friends and family and take care of any business you might have at home–even though you’re on a remote island! That being said, this is a detail you might not want to let everyone know about. If you’d rather enjoy the beauty of Alaska without worrying about the folks at home, rest assured that your secret is safe with us!
The Alaskan wilderness offers visitors so many incredible gifts that you can’t find anywhere else: world-class halibut fishing, the glowing northern lights, and miles upon miles of undisturbed nature are just a few of the treasures that Alaska has to offer. One thing that remote Alaska isn’t known for, however, is its incredible cell phone service.
The only service provider that really works near the lodge is AT&T thanks to a nearby cell tower. All other providers typically don’t provide coverage to our island (though verizon users do have some luck making phone calls while out on the water.) Even with the nearby AT&T tower, the AT&T signal can be spotty at best. To mitigate these issues, we’ve installed multiple boosters on lodge property to amplify the signal. Though the connection isn’t perfect, it is usually enough for AT&T users to send and receive SMS messages and call folks back home, though you might have to experiment to find that signal sweet spot.
Just be aware that weather can have an impact on cell signals. During storms, all sorts of things can happen to disrupt the connection between our cell boosters and the nearby tower. We’ve done our best to mitigate the impact of bad weather, but interruptions can happen.
If you don’t use AT&T, there’s no need to worry. We now offer full Starlink satellite connection to all of our guests for no additional fee. Thanks to this new technology, you should have no problems sending wifi based messages through services like iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook messenger. Just plan ahead and let everyone know that you might have a difficult time receiving SMS messages, but will still be available through web based messaging services.
As we mentioned above, we are proud to announce that we are now offering our guests full satellite internet connection via Starlink as part of our all inclusive vacation package! This has been a long time in the making, and Starlink officially became available in late 2022. Our IT technician Dave Barrett has been hard at work installing a network of Starlink satellite dishes to prepare for our 2023 season to make sure that you have a reliable, high speed internet connection while enjoying the remote wilderness.
To be safe, we’re also keeping our existing satellite wifi network just in case we experience any network outages. While this network isn’t as great as our starlink network, you should still be able to send emails and messages even if our main network goes down.
We’re always working to improve our wifi connection for our guests. In the world of technology, things change fast and it can be easy to fall behind the times. Thanks to our incredible IT technician, Pybus Point Lodge is always up-to-date with the latest tech to make sure that you have the best possible technological experience while enjoying our resort.
Just keep in mind that Starlink technology is brand new, and the communication infrastructure in our region is not nearly as sophisticated as it is in the lower 48 states. There are also a certain amount of challenges that we can face given our unique location. For example, despite being a huge step forward in satellite technology, starlink is still susceptible to connectivity issues during heavy storms, something that we face in southeast Alaska fairly often. These storms usually aren’t enough to cause full service outages (though that can happen) but they can significantly slow down the network speed.
We’ve invested a great deal of effort into improving our internet capabilities, but we are still on a remote island, and the wifi will never be as great as it is back at home–a small price to pay to get to experience such a truly wild place.
Though we’ve worked hard to provide our guests with wifi and cell coverage, we understand if you want to pretend that these conveniences aren’t available. Many of our guests–even many of our staff members–come to Alaska to leave the modern world behind and enjoy a simpler lifestyle.
Even though the modern world is extremely connected online, many of us find ourselves disconnected from the real world: real people, real moments, and real nature. Thankfully for us all, Alaska remains as one of the last wild places on earth.
If you feel like that experience is going to be ruined by work emails, why not tell everyone back home that you’re staying at a rustic, off-grid lodge? Most lodges don’t offer the kind of connection that’s available at Pybus so nobody will think twice!
