Alaska is home to some of the most awe-inspiring natural beauty in the world on both land and sea. No trip to Alaska is complete without spending at least a little bit of time out on the water, whether you plan on fishing or not. Some guests might want to spend as much time out on the boat as possible. If you’re looking for the chance to spend your afternoons searching for that perfect halibut or even if you’re looking for a chance to explore Alaska’s scenic bays at your own pace, we’ve got the perfect opportunity for you!
An all-inclusive vacation at Pybus Point Lodge doesn’t just mean that your cabin comes with free coffee and three gourmet meals a day. It means that you’ll have access to a wide range of amenities, guided adventures, and even free access to our fleet of jet-drive skiffs. Skiffs are available to all of our guests, regardless of previous boating experience.
If you’re new to the world of boating, you might not be familiar with the term "skiff." Essentially, a skiff is a small, versatile fishing boat, typically ranging from 12 to 18 feet long, with a flat bottom and no covered cabin. These boats are designed for nearshore travel and shorter distances, making them perfect for exploring Alaska's scenic bays.
At Pybus Point Lodge, our skiffs are all equipped with a powerful 150-horsepower Yamaha Jet Drive motor. This jet-drive system provides several advantages, including better safety and maneuverability. Unlike traditional propellers, the jet drive reduces the risk of damage from unmarked rocks in the bay, ensuring a smooth and worry-free ride.
Our new custom-built skiffs from Wooldridge Boats are designed to enhance your Alaskan adventure. Here are some of the standout features that make these boats perfect for exploring and fishing.
Powerful Jet Drive: Each skiff is equipped with a 150-horsepower Yamaha Jet Drive motor, offering excellent performance and safety.
Advanced GPS System: The same high-quality GPS system used in our larger boats ensures you can navigate confidently and find the best fishing spots.
High-Quality Gear: We provide the same top-notch fishing gear as our big boats, including rods, reels, tackle, bait, nets, and more.
Safety Equipment: Each skiff is outfitted with essential safety gear, including a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flares, life jackets, and a VHF radio.
Ample Space: Our skiffs feature an open layout, allowing you to fish from any side without obstruction. There’s plenty of room for up to six people, making it great for group outings.
Live Well and Storage: A live well keeps your catch fresh, and we have ample storage for all your gear. We also provide a wash-down pump and plenty of drink holders.
Comfort and Convenience: With plenty of seating and a clean, open deck, these skiffs are perfect for both fishing and leisurely exploration.
Our skiffs offer a variety of activities for our guests (18 and older). Pybus Point Lodge is located in Alaska's gorgeous Inside Passage, providing access to some of the best scenery and fishing in the world. Here are some activities you can enjoy:
Fishing: Whether you want to fish with a guide or on your own, our skiffs provide an excellent platform for halibut fishing. Non-Alaska residents can keep an additional halibut per day on unguided trips.
Wildlife Viewing: Explore remote coves and islands, and you might spot brown bears, sea otters, or humpback whales.
Scenic Tours: Enjoy breathtaking views as you navigate through Alaska’s pristine waters.
Another great way to use our skiff fleet is to go out fishing. Every guest at Pybus will have their own full-time guide to take them out fishing and sightseeing every day, but sometimes 8 hours just isn’t enough. If you want to head out in the late afternoon and spend a few hours on a self-guided fishing adventure, we’ll set you up with a private skiff. There’s even an added bonus that comes with taking a self-guided fishing trip; non-Alaska residents are only allowed to keep one halibut per day while on a guided expedition, and that halibut has to fit within the slot. While on an unguided expedition non-state residents are allowed to keep an additional halibut of any size, meaning that you can keep up to two halibut per day if you decide to head out on a skiff!
Skiffs are available on a first come first serve basis. If you’re interested in taking out a skiff, all you have to do is head on down to our dock and talk to a member of our dock team. To ensure that you get your chance to take out a skiff we recommend letting a dock team member know that you’d like a skiff first thing in the morning and they’ll reserve a skiff for you at your desired time slot.
Once you’re ready to take off one of our dock team members will give you a brief tutorial on how to pilot the skiff, how to use the gps, and where all the safety equipment is located. (Every skiff is outfitted with a fire extinguisher, flare gun, life vests, and a VHF radio.) After the tutorial the skiff is all yours! If you have any questions while you’re out on the water, all you have to do is give us a call on the radio. We have multiple radios throughout the lodge that are constantly being monitored by our staff.
If you’ve never captained a skiff, or any boat for that matter, there’s no need to worry. Our skiffs are incredibly easy to drive and have everything you need for success! Each skiff has a basic throttle for acceleration and a standard steering wheel, and that’s all you need to drive!
After leaving the dock, there’s nothing to worry about–we only allow our guests to check out a skiff when the water conditions are safe. All you have to do while piloting the skiff is watch out for any obstructions that might damage the hull. To make things easy for you, each skiff has a Garmin GPS unit that will tell you exactly how deep of water you’re in. As long as you pay attention to the depth (and watch out for any rocks or logs sticking out above the ocean’s surface) you have no risk of accidentally damaging the hull of the boat.
Speaking of the GPS, these Garmin units are high-quality and will always show you exactly where you are and how to make it back to the lodge. When you check out your skiff our dock team will show you the boundaries of how far from the lodge you’re allowed to travel. As long as you stay within the boundaries we tell you, the lodge will always be easy to find!
And like we said, each skiff has a VHF radio. If you experience any problems driving, you get lost, or have any mechanical issues, we’ll come and help!
At Pybus Point Lodge, it’s all included! Just let the dock team know that you intend to go fishing and they’ll equip you with everything you need. We have rods, reels, tackle, bait, nets, knives, pliers, and everything else you need to catch a halibut. Each skiff can even come equipped with a custom stocked cooler upon request!
If you’re dreaming of a summer afternoon out on the waters of Alaska, Pybus Point Lodge is the place for you. Our all-inclusive vacation package comes with free use of our jet skiff fleet to all of our guests. Whether you want to go halibut fishing, sightseeing, or you’re just looking to relax out on the water, our skiffs are yours to use.
