When it comes to fishing, having the right gear for the situation is crucial. In Alaska you’ll probably find yourself fishing for all sorts of different species in both salt and freshwater with each targeted species requiring an entirely different set of gear which can make packing a nightmare. Thankfully, guests who stay with us at Pybus Point Lodge never have to worry about packing all their fishing gear into an airplane. Every guest at Pybus Point Lodge will have free access to our arsenal of high-quality fishing and rain gear! From deck boots to halibut jigs, you’ll have everything you need for a successful fishing vacation when you stay at Pybus Point Lodge.
A big part of what makes south east Alaska such a popular destination for sightseers and nature photographers is the incredible plant and animal life found in the Tongass National Forest. Unlike other areas of Alaska, our area is full of dense plant life that depends on heavy amounts of rainfall to stay healthy and lush. Though it’s not always raining at Pybus Point Lodge, precipitation is fairly common. This can be anything from a short rain shower to a storm that lasts for days. We are big believers in embracing the moment, so don’t get discouraged! In fact, the rain can create cloud and fog patterns that create picturesque once in a lifetime moments!
The good news is that a trip to Pybus is all-inclusive–and we take the term all-inclusive very seriously. We don’t just provide our guests with five star lodging and three gourmet meals a day, we do everything for our guests from cleaning and freezing their fish to outfitting them head to toe in high quality rain gear.
In fact, just a few moments after stepping foot on our dock for the first time our dock team will provide you with non-slip deck boots, water resistant bibs, and a water resistant outer layer jacket that will keep you nice and dry no matter what the weather is like! You might even find that you like to wear your rain gear all the time–even on sunny days. Fishing can be messy business and the deck of a boat can get pretty slippery. We recommend that guests wear their deck boots whenever aboard a boat to prevent any accidental slips!
When it comes to fishing gear, Pybus Point Lodge has once again got you covered. You’ll have complete access to everything you need to catch halibut, salmon, rockfish, ling cod, and pacific cod. That includes halibut rods, bass rods, trolling rods, hooks, flashers, bait, jigs and everything else you could possibly need for a successful fishing trip.
Speaking of jigs, Pybus Point Lodge proudly uses Madame Lure jigs, all of which are designed by Madame Lure CEO and Pybus fishing Guide, Captain Matthew Strang!
And we don’t just offer saltwater gear, we’re fully equipped to take you and your party out for a freshwater fishing excursion. Waders, fly rods, spinner rods, flies, hooks, and all other freshwater gear are a part of your all-inclusive vacation.
If you’re planning on visiting a remote fishing lodge in Alaska, you’ve got to be prepared to pack light. Everything that you bring is going to have to fit inside of a small seaplane that has a much lighter carrying capacity than the commercial jet you take to Juneau.
You’ve also got to be prepared to take your fresh fish back home with you! Each guest at our lodge gets to bring home as much cleaned, vacuum packed, and frozen fish as they can catch. As you can imagine, these boxes can take up quite a bit of space–each box is large enough to carry up to 50 pounds of fish. Thankfully, transporting fish boxes home is a pretty easy process. Nearly all major airlines allow you to claim your fish boxes as carry-on luggage.
To make your flight as simple and cost effective as possible, we recommend bringing only a backpack worth of personal belongings to the lodge. That way you only have to claim your fish box on your return flight and you’ll avoid any additional charges for an extra carry-on.
