Alaska is one of the top dream destinations for anglers around the world, and it’s no surprise why! Our waters are home to a wide variety of fish species that are good to eat and a blast to catch. No matter when you visit us you’ll have the opportunity to fish for multiple different species. Some fishing charters only allow you to target one species per trip–not Pybus Point Lodge. We give our guests the freedom to target any species you like–assuming that it’s available at that time of year.
Our guests that visit us in the summer are most excited to bring home some tasty halibut. Halibut are a flaky white fish with thick chunks of meat on their bones. And lucky for you, pacific halibut migrate through the Inside Passage (where Pybus is located) every year. Our region of Alaska has been one of the top halibut fishing destinations for both commercial and sport fisherman for generations.
But don’t forget about all of the other plentiful native fish species! Non-residents of Alaska are allowed to keep one unguided, slot halibut per day which typically doesn’t take too long to catch. On most days you can anticipate having plenty of time on a full day fishing trip to go for one or two more species.
Here’s all of the fish that can be caught throughout the summer! To learn more about the variety of fish species you can catch while visiting the lodge, check out our fish species page to learn more!
No matter when you choose to stay with us you’ll always have the opportunity to catch halibut, rockfish, pacific cod, and ling cod. Halibut and rockfish are our bread and butter, most of our guests typically target both species on a full day fishing trip. After that, most folks choose to go for another local fish like ling cod or salmon.
All you need to consider while deciding which time of year is best for your vacation is salmon. Check out this chart we made to see when the salmon runs usually occur. Just keep in mind that nothing is guaranteed when it comes to nature; predicting salmon runs isn’t an exact science. Sometimes the salmon are late, sometimes they’re early, and sometimes there aren’t as many as we’d hoped for. No matter what the salmon run looks like, however, you’ll always be able to have the time of your life on one of our custom-built boats with your professional guide.
There’s no shortage of tips and secrets when it comes to fishing. Like with most things in life, the best advice we can give is always listen to the experts. In this case, there’s no person on earth with more expertise than your guide at Pybus Point Lodge. After fishing the same waters for over 100 straight days each year, the guides at Pybus Point Lodge know it all. There’s no person on the boat that has a better understanding of the water, tides, and local fish, than your captain. Our guests tend to take the most fish home when they let their captain plan out the day's schedule.
No matter when you ultimately decide to fish with us, you’ll have a great time reeling in a wide variety of incredible local fish species. Thanks to the geography of the area, the waters around the lodge create ideal conditions for both fish and fishermen. Come see for yourself why people have been fishing with Pybus Point Lodge for over 30 years.
